I have a 1 TB 2 1/2" in mine & there are no heat issues. Never heard the fan in it either.

Can't comment on SSD aside from them being small capacity & too expensive for my pocket.

The short answer is yes.

I think its an unnecessary upgrade especially at this stage of play, what size HDD do you have in there at the moment?

Ok then, here is the best advice I can give you -

Get a USB Flash Drive mount it and install your picons (if you use them), and your swap file to this. One of the benefits of the Duo2, is that it allows either a 2.5" or 3.5" Drive to be installed.

3.5" Drives tend to be cheaper and are available in larger sizes than 2.5" Drives, consider how many recordings you intend to keep on your Duo2 and buy a 3.5" drive to suite - You may also want to consider how often you will be housekeeping your recordings (moving to remote sharing, deleting, converting to a format that has in built compression).

If you have (or a friend or family member) an old S*y UK HD+ box around, or Virmin Tivo Box, you can use the hard drive out of these, unless its the early version they are likely to be 500GB once you have deleted the current content/partition and reformatted.

By using the USB Flash Drive, your HDD will be alseep unless viewing/watching recordings meaning it is not generating any heat/noise almost eradicating any issue you or any other user may have with the noise/heat generated by a HDD drive (which in all honesty is not a lot anyway).

No point going for ssd as it's not performance your after a standard hdd it more than capable it terms of performance and keeping cool.

I would get a large 1tb 2.5inch drive, when I bought mine I got myself a WD Red 1tb 2.5 inch drive which comes with 3 year warranty and have 24/7 operation as they were originally made for NAS drive.

I also have the wd red 3tb drives in my 8 bay qnap.

Work perfect.

I could have put in a 128gb ssd drive but no point, I have a 1tb ssd for my pc as that where it shines.

Thanks

Vu duo2 has sata2, so it´s not necessary to have a sata III instead, you´ll only need a sata 2 disk 8 Mb Cache and 5400 RPM ---> Why?

More cheap guess!
More silent!

I have na WD scorpio blue with 320 Gb, Cache 8 Mb cache 5400 Rpm, and works like a charm!

Hi,

I personally won't touch the blue drives, I work in I.T and most the laptops and desktop drives that fail in our machines are the WD Blue drives.

1TB Blue 2.5 drive (1 to 2 Years Warranty / No mention on MTBF / 5400RPM)

1TB WD RED 2.5 drive (3 Year Warranty / 1000 MTBF / IntelliPower RPM)
Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!

Price wise the blue seems more expensive that is due to it being 7mm but any drive that does not mention MTBF to me is not so good.

Thanks

Ok, but you agree that for machines that has only sata2, isn´t look necessary to buy sata3 with cache of 64!

It´s the thing i wanted to let others users know, there are no beneffits about using sata3, because it´s like we have sata2!

It´s like we call perhaps, pay for more, without any beneffits.

best regards
nunigaia

Note: I´ve read on several fóruns, users that want SSD. I ask .... What for?... to pay much Money for it!

I´ll prefer a black one ( wd )!

Hi,

I totally agree no point paying more, the two things I would look for would be warranty and MTBF.

Thanks

Hard drive fail rate and error rate is very low now anyway, given its not even going to be 'awake'/spinning (as picons, epg?) and anything else is stored on usb pen, HDD is only for multiboot and recording/watching back, so I would not be over concerned with failure rates.

Hard Drives fail in laptops as they are in the most unpolitical conditions, and used for prolonged hours without being put on laptop cooler or stood onside to allow airflow as the increase in temperature increases potential error (data corruption) or complete failure.

Bans advice for duo2 or any other drive that can take a 3.5" Sata drive get one out of an old sat/cable receiver. Format to FAT32 and if you want to be on safe side do a full surface scan.

For 2.5" sata drive and ps4 users (buy 1tb 2.5inch sata drive, swap with 500gb in ps4) install 1tb to ps4 and 500gb to duo2 :)

All others... are not covered in 'Ban's Advive' ;)

Nothing. The system should have found it automatically. Are you sure you connected all the cables? Do you have a stick inserted in a USB port as well?

Check Menu-Setup-System-Hard Disk Setup and see if the new drive is listed and mounted.
Check Menu-Setup-System-Recording Settings and make sure they are set to /media/hdd/movies/.

Depending which image you have loaded you may have the Device Manager option where you can check attached devices and settings.
