BBC & EE in FA Cup 4G Broadcast trial
BBC Research & Development and EE are working together on a trial of 4G Broadcast during Saturday’s FA Cup Final at Wembley.
It follows last year’s demonstration of the technology during the Commonwealth Games.
A key advantage of 4G Broadcast over regular mobile steaming is its ability to serve multiple people viewing the same content within a given area, without the buffering normally associated with transmitting several unicast streams.
Also involved in the trial are Qualcomm, Huawei, EVS and Intellicore.
During the Cup Final (kick-off 5.30pm BST), EE will be using a specially developed app that will allow invited guests to see three live feeds, as a well as a selection of replays of key moments from multiple camera angles, all under the control of the viewer
BBC R&D worked with BBC Sport to create a bespoke version of the BBC Sport app which connects directly to the 4G Broadcast signal. This trial uses a number of specially enabled tablets to allow the guests to see high quality versions of the live feeds, as well as the action replays.
