BT TV taps NetApp to support live streaming, VOD

Data storage and management firm NetApp is celebrating a contract win with BT TV to revamp its data storage infrastructure and to ensure that its on-demand video services are delivered ‘faultlessly’ to customers.

BT TVBT TV now has close to 1.3 million subscribers in the UK and is continuing to grow rapidly following the acquisition of the rights for English Premier League (EPL) and UEFA Champions League football.

With this increasing subscriber base, providing a consistent level of service across the entire range of content broadcast is crucial. Yet, says NetApp, the IPTV service had experienced occasional outages and was not providing the performance, reliability and support needed to deliver consistent quality coverage during peaks and troughs in demand.

“There’s clearly a growing trend for people watching what they want, when they want,” revealed BT TV designer Philip Buckley-Mellor. “This places a huge demand on VOD, and we wanted to strengthen this service. In the past we have experienced outages, and, given the huge popularity of sports programming and the growth in our customer base, it was imperative that we addressed this issue.”

To alleviate these problems, BT TV replaced its existing storage technology and has deployed the NetApp network-attached storage platform. This not only supports BT TV’s live streaming, but is also equipped with the NetApp Data ONTAP operating system and data management and data protection tools.

This, claims NetApp, will enable BT TV to focus on uptime and availability. Buckley-Mellor added that working with NetApp was changing the way BT TV worked and that its customer base was now growing whilst churn has fallen. This was attributed to the NetApp platform underpinning and supporting service delivery.
