Freesat adds 25,000 new homes in first nine months of 2015
UK subscription-free satellite TV service Freesat has revealed a strong third quarter of 2015 with the addition of 6,000 new TV homes.
This means that in the nine months to the end of September 2015, 25,000 new households have taken up the service, giving a total of 1.9 million households and more than four million viewers each week.
Adding considerably to the growth has been the company's Freetime connected TV service which showed 60% year-on-year growth. Remote record requests via the Freetime app and the website were up 20% in the last six months alone. Freesat assured that support for Freetime will continue through the peak consumer electronics sales period to December, promoting the connected service across TV, print and digital.
An improved content bouquet added to the service's popularity. During the third quarter, Freesat made six additions to its offering, which now boasts more than 200 channels. These included PBS America and Fox UK's YourTV. These additions, said the operator, mark a significant new trend with traditional pay-TV networks launching channels on free-to-air for the first time.
"It's been another busy quarter for Freesat and we're pleased that six new channels see the value in joining the platform," said Freesat managing director Alistair Thom. "The launch of Fox's Your TV and PBS America on free-to-air for the first time only reinforces the strength of free TV in the UK, proving that you don't need a pay TV subscription to enjoy great telly."
