Global IPTV subscriptions reach 123m
The growth rate for IPTV subscription numbers was slightly down in Q2 2015 compared to Q1 2015, according to Point Topic.

At the end of June 2015, there were 123 million IPTV subscriptions across the globe.

However, the net additions of 4.37 million represent the strongest adds since the first quarter of 2014 with an exception of Q1 2015. They were bolstered partly by the usual suspects, such as China.

As might be expected such a strong quarter has again increased the proportion of fixed line subscribers who also take an IPTV service, generally from their broadband operator.

IPTV subscriber growth continues to outstrip fixed broadband in percentage terms. Coming from a lower base as well as being a later entrant this isn’t unexpected but the fact that we do see it supports confidence in the future of the market, particularly for ISPs.

Note that Point Topic are measuring subscribers to operator IPTV services and not the OTT suppliers. Netflix and other similar providers are certainly affecting the markets where they are present but there is evidently strong competition.

Point Topic has explored the regional market shares of the global IPTV subscriber market. As expected we see Asia – East continue at the top of the regional pile, consistently with more net adds than anywhere else.

In the previous four quarters we could see the remarkable growth of IPTV subscribers in Spain. Telefonica had attracted new customers primarily by the upgraded sports packages with more football as well as Formula 1 amongst others.

However, in Q2 2015 the Spanish IPTV market has returned to “normal” growth rates it had witnessed before the boom.
