Hispasat has launched a new Ultra High Definition TV service that’s encoded in High Dynamic Range.

The Spanish operator says it’s the first satellite service in the world to use Dolby Vision HDR. The new channel will be available in Europe over the Hispasat 1E satellite (30 degrees West).

HDR technology is said to provide better quality, brighter picture, greater contrast and more colour for high resolution images.

“The goal of this new technology is to reproduce a wider luminance range, creating more intensity levels between lighter and darker areas of the image as a way to retain more information and offer a greater degree of detail. It seeks to provide more brightness, greater contrast and more colour, in order to achieve a more realistic image than we currently have in television,” the company said in a statement.

The new channel, launched in collaboration with Cellnex Telecom, Dolby, RTVE and Thomson Video Networks is in addition to Hispasat’s existing 4K channel that has been in operation since 2013.
