Microsoft has doubled the amount of storage on its OneDrive service to 30GB for a limited time.

Users have to install the app and set the photo auto upload feature on to get the free space, before the end of September.

"For those getting ready to install iOS 8, this means you won't have to delete a bunch of photos or apps to make room for the upgrade," the company said in a blog post, hoping to attract users of the latest iPhone operating system.

"While it might seem strange to announce new features on a Friday evening, we've been listening to the commentary about storage on the new iPhones released today [September 18] and we wanted to get you more storage right away."

Windows Phone and Android handset holders can also take advantage of the offer, which is larger than the 5GB of free storage given on Apple's iCloud Drive.

In June, Microsoft increased its free standard storage capacity to 15GB and in September the company made it possible to upload 10GB for a single file.
