Netflix set for only 'moderate' success in Spain
It is a couple of months until Netflix will launch in Spain, and it seems the subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) company will find a very different scenario than it's used to, say analysis from Economía Digital.

Netflix doesn't have the strongest brand image in Spain, a country in which other similar services like Yomvi and Wuaki.tv are already well established.

According to the analyst, the situation in Spain reflects Netflix's future evolution worldwide, now that it has decided to enter a large number of more mature markets.

The main problem Netflix will find in Spain, at least at the beginning, will come from one of strengths of the company: original content. Because it so delayed its Spanish launch, the over-the-top (OTT) platform has already sold its most well known formats to Canal+, now absorbed by Telefónica, and they are available online and on-demand through Yomvi, Movistar Series and Movistar Plus.

Despite this, however, Netflix has held on to the exclusivity of its most recent productions, such as Sense8 by the Wachowski brothers.

In addition, an agreement with Atresmedia has been apparently reached – although there has been no official confirmation yet - and Orange and Vodafone are said to be studying a partnership possibility with Netflix.

Still, according to the analyst, Spain is only one more step in Netflix's global plans. Through its recent and upcoming expansion, the company is expected to quickly gain between five to six million subs.
