Google has decided to make Google+ optional for new users who sign up to its other products.

Since January 2012, having an account on the company's social network had been compulsory for those who joined Gmail and YouTube, according to Marketing Land.

Now new users are presented with a 'No thanks' option when signing up.

Google was particularly criticised for integrating YouTube accounts with Google+.

The recent move had led to speculation that the social network could be closed, especially after Google+ boss Vic Gundotra left in April.

In July Google+ softened its stance on pseudonyms, allowing users to go by their choice of moniker rather than requiring them to use their real names.
