Astra satellite operator SES and its German subsidiary HD+ will launch a joint Ultra HD showcase channel on September 4, 2015.

UHD1 by Astra/HD+ will replace the Astra Ultra HD demo channel on Astra (19.2° East) on the frequency 10.994 GHz H (SR 22,000, FEC 9/10).

Between 08.00 and 20.00 CET, retailers and DTH households can receive the channel unencrypted. After 20.00 CET, they will either need an HD+ module or an HD+ Ultra HD receiver with and HD+ smartcard for reception. The precondition is an Ultra HD TV set equipped with an HEVC decoder.

“With our new channel UHD1 by Astra/HD+, we can show the brilliant picture quality of Ultra HD to a wide audience,” Wilfried Urner, CEO of HD Plus, said in Munich. “Ultra HD increasingly gains importance among manufacturers, retailers and broadcasters. The industry expects around one million UHD TV sets to be in German living rooms by the end of the year.”

During the free-to-air window, the showcase channel mainly targets retailers with short clips to illustrate the new TV standard. From 20.00 CET, the channel focuses on viewers at home with mainly exclusive videos from the areas of action, lifestyle, documentaries and chill-out. The material shot by the HD+ apprentices will also be screened in the evening.
