UK gets UHD from satellite

Satellite operator SES is now feeding its Ultra-HD demo channel to the UK via the Freesat free-to-view satellite bouquet. The SES 4K channel – aimed at retailers – is the first UHD channel to be beamed specifically to the UK, although European viewers to the SES Astra satellites operating from 19.2 degrees can now view a half-dozen UHD channels.

Freesat broadcasts from SES satellites at 28.2 degrees East, and broadcasts more than 200 video and audio channels without any subscription fee. The bouquet includes all of the UK’s public broadcast channels as well as services from CNN and CNBC, CBS, movie channels, more than a dozen news services, music and children’s channels, religious and ethnic broadcasts and shopping channels.

Viewers will need a suitable 4K Ultra-HD TV display to watch transmissions.

SES has been showcasing Ultra-HD since the end of 2014, and on September 1st added Fashion One 4K as the world’s first global Ultra-HD channel and beaming its fashion-based entertainment to Europe, North and South America, Also on the SES UHD platform (from 19.2 degrees East) is ‘pearl.tv’, a German language shopping channel. Next week on October 5th will see ‘INSIGHT’ launched in UHD.

The key word in UHD is ‘Ultra’, which simply translates as more pixels on the screen, more colour in those pixels and a truly immersive viewing experience because of a larger field of view. British (and Irish) electrical retailers are showcasing the latest 4K displays, generally larger than the current average 40”-42” screen size.
