The re-launch of the former Greek public broadcaster ERT has moved a stage closer.

Ekathimerini reports that a draft bill for its reinstatement has been made available for public consultation ahead of an anticipated submission in parliament from this Thursday (March 12) onwards.

A ‘new’ ERT would aim to rehire some of the 2,000 staff made redundant following its closure by the former conservative-led government in 2013, while the 500 that moved to the current public broadcaster NERIT would retain their posts.

ERT would be funded through receiver licence fees, unchanged at €3 a month, payable through electricity bills, and offer viewers quality programming, including sporting events.

It would also be subject to stricter financial management than its predecessor.
