The upcoming Star Wars movies will span various genres, according to Lucasfilm vice president of development Kiri Hart.
JJ Abrams is directing Star Wars Episode VII for release in 2015, with Rian Johnson taking over for Episode VIII.
There will also be a series of Star Wars franchise spinoff movies, with Godzilla filmmaker Gareth Edwards attached to one of those projects.
Lucasfilm's Hart has now hinted that the upcoming movies will not "rigidly" adhere to established film genres.
"I think there are boundaries [to what defines Star Wars], but we don't want to rigidly define them," Hart told The Wall Street Journal.
She went on to say: "It's obviously not slapstick comedy, but there's room for many different stories and genres that still feel like Star Wars."
Hart added that Lucasfilm and Disney are committed to creating a collaborative filmmaking environment on the Star Wars films.
We say, 'Let us give you some narrative space to play around in'," she said.
It was announced earlier today that the television series Star Wars Rebels has been renewed for a second season.
Star Wars Episode VII is scheduled to open on December 18, 2015.
