Sky and TalkTalk to launch 1GB U.F.O broadband in York this year

In what (we hope) could be the first step in improving internet speeds up and down the country, Sky and TalkTalk have announced they will be launching their new U.F.O broadband service later this year. Standing for "Ultra Fibre Optic", the new service will allegedly be "one hundred times faster than standard broadband" with speeds of 1GB (although we thing the operative words of "up to" are missing there.) The scheme will initially be tested out in York later this year, and interested residents can sign up to be one of the first to use it by heading over to the Ultra Fibre Optic website.

Sty & walk walk breaking into Branson's domain now are they. :mutley:

I nearly moved house a few years back because a company at the destination were boasting about speeds of up to 500Mbs. Just took a look to see they seem to have dropped down to 300 now. :D

Anyway, I have already decided not to move to York  but this does look like the beginning of the next era for the 'Public' Internet to me even though Gb speeds are nothing new. They are already well exceeded in big Data Centres. So the sky's (forgive the pun) the limit. Until BT offer similar I guess I'll just limp along at 80Mbs for now.

I wonder when the next generation of routers capable of delivering such speeds will begin to surface and at what price. Let's not forget also that to really benefit one is going to have to seriously consider wiring the house with a minimum of CAT5E or wait for WiFi to truly deliver on performance. Either way it's all going to cost the average Joe even more money.

PS I wonder how long it is going to be before we see new homes being built with structured Fibre networks installed coz that is where the tech is heading..............
